How did the Lightless Prophecy (the series, not the actual prophecy) come to be?
The Lightless Prophecy saga began with the premise ‘what if we should have magic on Earth’. It starts out as an urban fantasy with magic mostly missing from the world. The series becomes epic as the characters discover the universe has more wonders in store than they imagined, including new worlds and magic that takes lifetimes to master.
I wanted to imagine a world where we can, even if only in our imaginations, connect with a universe made of magic. One in which we already live, not a secondary world that doesn’t exist relative to our planet.
I wanted a universe where light and dark are not good and evil but a necessary balance to be restored.
I wanted a world where fate hinges on human artistry. Where all the scheming and attempts to control the forces of nature and plans to save humanity at any cost mean nothing if we can no longer dance. Feel. Make art.
As for the humans and the magic, I wanted to explore the idea of humans having ultimate control of their bodies, even if they didn’t realise it. It seems like we would all choose to be perfect, but it turns out that doesn’t exist. Instead, we choose to feel real. And we see the beauty in realness instead of aesthetics. That’s not to say that someone can’t manifest glitter in their hair!
